Now that 2015 is well underway, CodeNEXT is launching into its next phase, which will include working group meetings to address affordability, “missing middle” housing, and obstacles for small businesses. CodeNEXT, a program of Imagine Austin, is an initiative to revise the city’s land development code. It is tentatively aiming to wrap up by 2016.

Working groups began meeting on January 20, and have meetings scheduled through early March. The groups will discuss how those three issues – affordability; infill, compatibility, and missing middle housing; and obstacles for small business – are linked to the land development code revision, and offer suggestions to the consulting team as it develops a new code. All working group meetings are open to the public.

In late 2014, City Council – in one of its last meetings as a group of seven, at-large councilmembers – selected a framework for the land development code rewrite that among other factors, will focus on green infrastructure and sustainable water resources, and will follow a three-step process.
