Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is in the midst of several significant expansion and improvement projects aimed at meeting the growing demands of Central Texas travelers. With passenger numbers continuing to climb, these projects represent critical infrastructure investments to enhance capacity, efficiency, and passenger experience.

Here’s a quick look at some of the projects currently under construction, and a few to watch for in the coming years:

West Gate Expansion Adds Space and Amenities

AUS West Gate Expansion Project Austin Airport

The $164 million West Gate Expansion project, currently under construction beyond gates 33 and 34, will add 84,500 square feet of new space across three levels. The project includes the creation of three new gates, replacement of twelve gate-boarding bridges, and significant passenger amenities. New features will include expanded seating areas serving five gates, additional dining and retail options, and improved traveler comfort facilities such as a quiet room, nursing spaces, and what will become the terminal’s largest restroom complex. A notable addition is a third-level mezzanine offering additional seating and concourse views. Construction began in summer 2023 with completion expected in spring 2026.

West Infill and TSA Checkpoint 3 Expansion Enhances Security Processing

AUS Airport TSA Checkpoint Expanison project

This $241 million project will significantly expand the Barbara Jordan Terminal’s processing capacity. The project adds 75,000 square feet across four levels and will introduce 6-8 additional security lanes at TSA Checkpoint 3. The expansion includes new ticketing counters and kiosks, upgraded HVAC equipment, and additional elevators. Construction began in fall 2023 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2026. The project recently received a $15.99 million boost from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Airport Terminals Program.

New Baggage Handling System Improves Efficiency

AUS Airport Baggage handling system upgrade

A critical behind-the-scenes upgrade is the new outbound baggage handling system, which will revolutionize how AUS processes checked luggage. The $241.5 million project includes 1.5 miles of conveyor belts and will significantly increase baggage processing capacity. In its initial phase, the system will handle 2,400 bags per hour—800 more than the current system—with ultimate capacity reaching 4,000 bags per hour upon full completion. The project began in late 2019 and reached a significant milestone in summer 2024 with Phase 1 completion, followed by Phase 2 completion in 2026.

Looking Ahead: Future Projects in the Design Phase

AUS’s transformation extends beyond current construction, with several major projects in the design phase. These include a new Concourse B with an accompanying connector tunnel, a reimagined Arrivals and Departures hall, and comprehensive parking improvements. These future developments will further expand the airport’s capacity to serve Central Texas’s growing aviation needs.
